After the late 18th century, the old geometrically ornamented sleeve decorations and the married woman's white linen cap were replaced by a colourful floral design. The wearing of waistcoats by men became widespread relatively late, in the early 19th century. As people of higher social standing, the wealthier peasants also wanted to smarten themselves up with waistcoats of floral, checked or striped fabric.
