The first reference to knitted garments in Estonia dates from the 14th century. Long knitted stockings became popular in Estonia in the middle of the 18th century. In Mulgimaa, the old custom of wrapping something round women's legs, to make them thicker, still survived at the end of the last century; and so stockings were knitted especially wide.
